The Craftsman
MICHAEL FLEMING

Meet Michael Fleming, part materials pirate, part craftsman, part artist. From his workshop in Phippsburg, Maine, Michael creates sculptural furniture from driftwood gathered along the state’s wild coast. Each piece is a product of patience, weather, and intuition, shaped by years of salt air and careful hands. For him, it’s never about perfection; it’s about the story in every grain and the satisfaction of doing it better each time.

"I dive deep into my work, getting inspiration from all Maine’s coast has to offer. At the end of the day everything is at my fingertips. I can surf, sail, fish, mountain bike, create."

Connecting Craftsmanship To Artistry

"I got really bored with everything just being square and with…plans – there was no inspiration. I'm more into that organic, one-of-a-kind piece. When I traveled the world it opened up my eyes to all these other places I went to. If you're a carpenter and you're handy, wherever you go in the world, there's work! People gravitate to you. And then I realized, here in Maine, I have this beautiful resource. It takes a lot of effort to get that, but I just knew there was a market. And then it just took off from there."

"Everything I make, I'm like, 'I can do better.' Because, you know, being an artist or clothing company or whatever, you gotta be competitive and do something a little different than the next person."
